Leaders of the Market Traders Association of Nigeria (MATAN) on Monday said the group will continue to support initiatives that can enhance peace and unity across the Southern region.
The group comprising all marketers and traders association in the south made this known during a courtesy visit to the Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Abiodun Ige Adams at his Omole Phase 2 residence on Monday.
The group, while applauding Adams gesture also conferred the coveted position of the National Grand Patron of the association on the Yoruba generalissimo for bringing to bear his wealth of experience in nation and organisation building.
Speaking at the meeting, the National Secretary,Ambassador Olakunle Moses Johnson said the reason for the meeting was to appreciate and honour Aare Gani Adams for his various contributions toward the ensuring unity and progress of the organisation,adding that Iba Adams had demonstrated a strong desire for peace and unity across the south.
Amb.Johnson noted also that the group will always draw inspirations from Adams’ commitment to peace and unity in the southwest, pointing out that Nigeria’s progress depends largely on peace and the unity of all the regions that made up the entire nation.
“We can only appreciate you for being there for us, especially, during the trying times when MATAN was saddled with the responsibility to restructure the organization along regional line. We went through difficult moment then but today we have good stories to tell, and all these successes were as a result of your support and advice”he said
While responding,Iba Gani Adams reiterated the need for unity of purpose among members, saying nothing could be achieved without proper and strategic planning.
Iba Adams maintained also that the reason for the prolonged insecurity in the country was because peace had for a very long time remained elusive across the country as a result of failed leadership.
He urged leaders of the group to cultivate the habit of transparency, stressing that members should always remain committed to the progress of the group.
“We are where we are because of style of leadership centered largely on nepotism, corruption, disunity and insecurity. A country where leaders could not guarantee the safety of its citizens isn’t worth its nationhood. On this note, I want to appreciate you for this honour,it is wonderful and I must also urge you to work together in ensuring peace across board.
The group’s Publicity Relation Officer(PRO)Hon. Bisi Williams, in his remarks eulogised the leadership qualities of the Aare Onakakanfo, saying the group will always look up to him as the pillar of hope and support.
